I'm happy to say that I feel like this show is finding its feet. It's not what I was expecting, but I'm enjoying it quite a lot.
The leap I had to make was from my initial expectations of this to be a parody of Star Trek by the Rick & Morty guys. That's certainly what it is, but thinking about it like that doesn't quite fit properly. It's more of a workplace/family sitcom, as might be made by the Rick & Morty guys if they're still around in the 24th century.
There's still plenty of Star Trek parody here - the jokes and nods come fast and thick, and I appreciate most of them. But despite being totally not-Trek in terms of the story beats and presentation (even if they nailed the TNG aesthetic), the heart of the show has the optimism and camaraderie of Trek. I'm digging it.
