If there's one thing the last four years have made clear, it's that laws don't matter if a criminal is prepared to ignore them and no one does anything to stop them.
(Fun fact: the five tribes that were forced to march on the Trail of Tears sued the federal government to prevent being kicked off their land. The Supreme Court ruled in their favor, but Andrew Jackson (a hero of Dear Leader's, you may recall) said "[Chief Justice] John Marshall has passed down his decision, let John Marshall enforce it" and proceeded with his genocide.)
(Yes, it was genocide, as defined by article II, section (c) of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Not going to debate this.)
Right now there's lots of people talking about how Dear Leader lost, ha ha ha, and he's losing in court again and again and again, HA HA HA. While I freely admit how satisfying it is to watch Dear Leader get defeated in court again and again and again, I'm not feeling sanguine about it. He's been losing in court, but the percentage of his supporters who think he actually won the election and that Biden's victory was fraudulent has been increasing steadily. He doesn't need to convince the courts, or the entire country, or even a majority of the country. He and the Republicans have been perfectly content to exercise minority rule. He just needs to convince the right people at the right place at the right time to do something. I've got no doubt that he's got enough people convinced already.
So he's started saying things about "martial law" and such, or his proxies like Michael Flynn are saying it instead. And each time it's denounced, and the various toadies rush to the media and explain how he didn't really mean it, and the military brass say how the military has no role in deciding an election. All well and good, except this is what he does every fucking time. He floats an idea, it gets dismissed as him joking (stupid libs believing words). And it gets discussed, and it gets pointed out ad nauseum that he can't really do that, it's illegal, but meanwhile it's getting normalized, and when he finally does it no one stops him.
This isn't some kind of political genius on his part - he remains so very, very stupid it's embarrassing. But he doesn't think there are any legitimate restraints on his behavior, and he keeps being proven right.
Remember: he doesn't need to convince everyone to back him. He just needs to convince enough of his brownshirts, and sew enough doubt and confusion that no one stops him. And I've no doubt he's already got enough brownshirts.
